John A. Lovely, a distinguished alumni from Albert Lea High School in Albert Lea, Minnesota, was a renowned American lawyer and jurist. Born on November 18, 1843, in Burlington, Vermont, he embarked on his legal career after being admitted to the Wisconsin bar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1866 (map). Thereafter, he practised law initially in Watertown, Wisconsin, before shifting his base to Albert Lea, Minnesota, in 1867.

During his notable career, from 1869 to 1874, Lovely served as county attorney for Freeborn County, Minnesota. His crowning achievement, however, was his tenure on the Minnesota Supreme Court from 1900 to 1905 where his contributions to law and justice were significant and impactful. John A. Lovely passed away at his home in Albert Lea, Minnesota, on January 28, 1908, but his legacy continues to inspire future generations of lawyers and jurists.
