Donna Held Matthews

Donna Held Matthews

Class of 1956

HIGH SCHOOL YEARS - Donna came to BCHS in her senior year. She was in chorus and the PEP club.
FROM THE YEARBOOK - “I will my ability to be a senior to Jackie Cowan.” (Class of ‘57)
FROM THE MAY 22, 1956 BEAVER - “Donna Held wills her ability to grow long fingernails to Jackie Cowan.”
CLASS OF 1956 REUNITED AFTER TWENTY YEARS - “Bar tender at the State Bar.”
AFTER HIGH SCHOOL - Donna went to Butte Business College and then worked for the Anaconda Company as a secretary for about four years. The Anaconda Company miners went on strike, and Donna knew that her job wouldn’t last long, so she decided to move on before she got laid off.
She had relatives in Sacramento, CA and they suggested that she come down there in1962 where she started work as a secretary for an insurance company. She met her husband, Archie, in 1962, and they were married in 1963. While here, she went to Sacramento State University to study accounting.
Archie was a civil engineer for the State of California, and they were transferred to Red Bluff in 1965. She was a stay-at-home mom while in Red Bluff.
They later moved to Woodland, CA (near Sacramento). Here Donna went back to Yuba State College and got her AA in accounting. She went to work for the California Valley Bank in New Accounts. Donna went from there to McKeffon Drug as an assistant buyer. She later went to work for California State University.
They retired in 1995 and moved to Polaris, MT.
THINGS I’M GLAD MY MOTHER NEVER KNEW (I HOPE) OR I WISH SHE HAD NEVER KNOWN - And yet another one with a car. I’m really really positive that most of our mothers wouldn’t like to know some of these stories. It seems that Donna and her then boyfriend ‘Jack’ (not from BCHS) were out with Gay Lee Martin and her boyfriend Tim. They were doing wheelies in a field, chasing jackrabbits at 70 miles per hour. And didn’t we have fun in those days?
FAMILY - Donna and Archie’s oldest daughter is Theresa. Theresa is married to Dan Simpson. They live in Rancho Cordova, CA. Both Theresa and Dan work for the California Tax Board.
Paul is married to Jennifer, and they live in Orangevale, CA. Paul is a headhunter for large companies. Jennifer works for the City of Sacramento. They have a daughter Sophie, 6, and a son Jack, 4.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES - Donna likes gardening, quilting, “sort of” golfing, and ball room dancing. She also likes reading and prefers non-fiction. And best of all (for me anyway) is that Donna enjoys gourmet cooking.
HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES - Donna’s favorite teacher was Pat Curran, English. Best friends included Jackie Cowan, Gay Lee Martin, Marlene Orr, and Thais Lightfoot.
“I enjoyed my high school years.” Who could forget the ball games, going to dances, having ice cream at the Big Dipper and going to wiener roasts. “Daisy” was always invited. (Do you all remember Daisy?) (FROM HAL: CALL DONNA - DON’T CALL ME!)
