Vonda Jones Geertsen

Vonda Jones Geertsen

Class of 1956

HIGH SCHOOL YEARS - Vonda was in FHA and was the District Secretary her junior year. She was a cheerleader and in the Pep Club. She played the clarinet in the band. Vonda was Class Vice President her junior year. She was in the Honor Society.
FROM THE YEARBOOK - “I will my height to Jimmy McBroom (two years behind) for next year’s basketball season.”
FROM THE MAY 22, 1956 BEAVER - “Vonda Jones wills her hoarse voice after the games to Gay Lee Martin.”
CLASS OF 1956 REUNITED AFTER TWENTY YEARS - “Missionary recently sent to Okefinoky (sic) Swamps for her work.” (Vonda tells me that this didn’t work out.)
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE REUNION - Thought it was wonderful. Had a great time. She was impressed with what everyone has done with their lives. She wished she had kept in touch with many of them over the years.
AFTER HIGH SCHOOL - Vonda went to BYU to study nursing. She met her husband (John) and they were married in 1957. After school, they moved to San Francisco where they stayed for three years. John was the assistant golf pro at the San Francisco Golf Club.
They later moved to Alpine, UT where John became the first golf pro at Alpine Country Club.
They were Alpine for two years when John was offered the head golf pro position at Monterrey Peninsula Golf Club at Pebble Beach. They stayed here for the next 46 years. Here John started a successful golf school called “Your Turn for Success”.
In 2004 they moved to Pleasant Grove, UT where they semi-retired. John still teaches at the local golf club in the summer, and teaches at Palm Desert in Palm Springs in the winter.
As a point of interest, John was named one of the top 100 golf instructors by Golf Digest two times.
OK, now here is the good stuff. Vonda mostly doesn’t care for golf, but occasionally plays with John. All of their kids are golfers (of course).
FAMILY - Vonda and John have two boys and two girls. Greg is married to Rosi (who is from Spain). Greg is a commercial real estate developer in the western United States. They live in Walnut Creek, CA, and have one daughter 16 and one son 13.
Melanie is married to Doug Thorn, and they live in Orem, UT. Doug is a used car broker. Melanie and Doug have four sons, ages 25, 23, 21, and 19, all in college. They also have a daughter 16 in high school.
Lance is married to Tayva, and they live in Danville, CA. They have one son 9, a daughter 6, and another son 2. Lance is a CPA.
Holly is married to Michael Johnson, and they live in New Jersey. NOW GET THIS. Holly and Michael are professional ballroom dancers. Holly taught Richard Gere how to dance for the movie “Shall We Dance?”. Holly also had a bit part in that movie. They have a daughter 3 and a son 1.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES - Vonda likes to read, and haunts antique stores. She also loves being grandmother to her twelve grandchildren.
HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES - Her best friends were Dalene Lessey and Marlene Westead. She recalls having a lot of fun in cheerleading. Vonda says that she really learned a lot from Mrs. Anderson and Miss Christie. She also thought that Mrs. McCollum was a special teacher.
