About Kathleen Ann Logan

Birth: 1950, Chico, California

Death: January 10, 2002

Former Sister of Notre Dame de Namur and Dean of Enrollment at Notre Dame de Namur University, Belmont, passed away on January 10, 2002 of cancer at her San Carlos home. Throughout her illness she inspired all of those who knew her with her dignity, grace and spirit.

Kathy was born in Chico, CA, in 1950. She graduated from Chico High School in 1969 and Notre Dame de Namur University (formerly College of Notre Dame) with a BA degree in Chemistry. She earned her secondary teaching credential at the University and then obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UC Davis in 1986.

A member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur from 1970 through 1987, Dr. Logan, a third-generation Californian, continued to have strong ties to the Sisters. When she left its community, she was happy to continue teaching at the University, believing strongly in the mission of the Sisters. Kathy taught chemistry and other sciences, mathematics and religion at Notre Dame High School from 1974 through 1980. She came to the University as a part-time lecturer and became a full-time faculty member in 1986. She received several honors during her academic career, including the Sister Catharine Julie Cunningham Teaching Project Award and the CRC Chemistry Achievement Award. In addition, she was active with the American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, California Association for Chemistry Teachers, and Bread for the World. Kathy served the University in a variety of capacities, in addition to her faculty role as Chair of the Department of Natural Sciences and Professor of Biochemistry. She served as first Director of Added Dimensions, a service to returning adult students. For a number of years, she chaired the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. She served as Faculty Senate President and Vice President. She demonstrated leadership in academic advising. Most recently, she gave her energy as Dean of Enrollment, in charge of both undergraduate and graduate recruitment and retention.

"The University has lost a brilliant, charming, and delightful woman of impeccable character," said University President John B. Oblak. "Her rapport with students as teacher, mentor and advisor, and her gift of kindness and compassion made her a very special person to so many people. She will be deeply missed by the Sisters and the academic community."

She is survived by her husband, Robert Adams of San Carlos; her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Logan; and brothers John Logan and Dr. Kenneth Logan, all of Chico, CA; stepchildren Elizabeth Dinnsen and Robert Adams; one niece and three nephews.

A service was held at the Notre Dame de Namur University Chapel on Friday, January 18th at 1pm, followed by a reception. A funeral service was held at Transfiguration Episcopal Church on Saturday, January 19th, at 2pm, reception following. The church is located at 3900 Alameda de las Pulgas, San Mateo. In lieu of flowers the family prefers contributions to Notre Dame de Namur University, Transfiguration Episcopal Church, San Mateo, or Mission Hospice.
