Toni Baher

I started third grade the year John Glenn opened, in 1967. It was a lot different than the school I was at before, Seven Hills elementary School. The layout was strange, but kids adapt quickly. Soon after school started, they had a ceremony, and John Glenn was there. I was thrilled when I met him and got to shake his hand. Something I've never forgotten. Ten years later, I met him again, and was just as thrilled when we shook hands. He was a hero to me the rest of my life.
I bet most people don't know that during the sixties and some of the seventies, girls had to wear skirts or dresses to school. Being a tomboy, I loathed it. Nothing I liked better than walking to the bus stop, and waiting for the bus, wearing a short skirt, with legs bare, as the frigid winter wind blew past. My toes and fingers were always numb. Of course the bus was late. Every. Single. Day. God forbid if it snowed the night before. The thought of getting to the lot early to clean off the bus, never crossed the mind of any bus driver. Leaving little children to freeze an extra twenty minutes was never part of the equation. Ah, good times.
Every year, the kids in my class were pretty much the same. In the 4 years I was there, I never once saw another child bullied. In my class, other classes, or the playground. We all got along, and I never saw a fight. We were all kind to each other, and at the time, I took it for granted, but looking back, I now see how remarkable it was.
I hope more people add their stories. I, for one would love to read them.
