What is Jack Mildren known for?

Jack Mildren, born on October 10, 1949, in Kingsville, Texas, is a notable alumnus of Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas. He set high school football passing records and proceeded to graduate in 1968. Mildren embarked on a career as a professional football player and politician, leaving an indelible mark in both arenas.

At the University of Oklahoma, Mildren was a stellar quarterback, eventually known as the "Godfather of the Wishbone". During his tenure from 1969 to 1971, he played a critical role in turning the fortunes of the team significantly. His senior season in 1971 was record-breaking; he set records for most rushing yards in a season (1,140), most career touchdown passes (25), and season passing efficiency (209.0). Though the records have since been surpassed, his contributions to the team have not been forgotten.

Following his successful college career, he went on to play in the National Football League (NFL), being picked at number 46 in the second round of the 1972 NFL draft. Mildren played for the Baltimore Colts from 1972 to 1973 and the New England Patriots in 1974. His prowess as a quarterback was unmistakable, bringing further accomplishment to his already embellished sports career.

Post his football career, Mildren ventured into the realm of politics and took up the role of the 13th Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma. He served in this capacity from January 14, 1991, to January 9, 1995. An active member of the Democratic Party, he also owned an oil company and later became a successful bank executive in Oklahoma. Mildren passed away on May 22, 2008, leaving behind a legacy in both sports and politics.
