Governor of Montana (1935–37), class of 1899[2]

What is Elmer Holt known for?

Born on October 14, 1884, in Savannah, Missouri, William Elmer Holt was a prominent American political figure known primarily for his tenure as the 10th Governor of Montana from December 15, 1935, to January 4, 1937. After his early education, Holt moved with his family to a ranch in Miles City, Montana, where he completed his high school education at Custer County District High School, laying the foundation for his illustrious career in politics.

After graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1902, Holt found his calling in politics, demonstrating his leadership skills and commitment to public service. In 1912, he won a seat in the Montana House of Representatives, serving one term. His political career then led him to the Montana State Senate from 1933 to 1935, during which time he was designated as president pro tempore in 1935.

Upon the demise of Governor Frank Henry Cooney, Holt was sworn in as the 10th Governor of Montana on December 15, 1935. After his stint as governor, he run for re-election in 1936 but was unsuccessful. Nonetheless, Holt's profound impact on Montana's governance didn't cease to resonate as he served as the delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Montana the same year.

Post-politics, Holt served as a land agent for the Northern Pacific Railroad based in Seattle, Washington, marking a significant shift in his career trajectory. But, despite the change in his professional path, his life's work remained rooted in service and leadership.

Holt passed away on March 1, 1945, in Seattle, Washington, leaving behind an enduring legacy of public service.
