What is Michael Reid known for?

Michael Edward Reid, source, a notable alumni from Dougherty Comprehensive High School in Albany, Georgia, source, was born on June 25, 1964 in Albany, GA. Reid is best known as a formidable football player, having played as a linebacker at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and for the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League (NFL).

In his college football career, Reid set a single-season record for solo tackles with 101 in 1986, a record that still stands. He also holds the record for the most fumbles recovered in a game (3 against Ohio state). For his outstanding efforts, Reid was honored as the team's MVP in 1986, and was elected to both the Big Ten's Football team and its All Academic Football Team.

Reid was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the 7th round (181st overall) of the 1987 NFL Draft. He strategically played as a linebacker for the Falcons from 1987 to 1992. After retiring from football, Reid was inducted into the Albany Sports Hall of Fame in April 2000. However, his journey didn't stop there. Reid transitioned into a different field, as he immersed himself in the study of martial arts. This led him to open a martial arts school initially named the Chinese Shaolin Center for the Martial Arts in 1993, which was later renamed Reid's Premier Martial Arts. His school teaches Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Krav Maga, and Kuntao/Silat.

His credentials in martial arts are impressive as well. Reid earned his 6th Degree Rank Master Title in Shaolin Martial Arts in 2010. He also continues to help others by working with youth, life coaches, and speaking to groups in conjunction with his martial arts responsibilities. Check out more on his martial arts school here.

On top of all these accomplishments, Reid was inducted into the Masters Martial Arts Hall of Fame in August 2015. In addition, Reid has trained overseas in traditional Hawaiian Lua and Kuntao/Siat/ KungFu in Indonesia. A testament to his commitment to his craft and pursuit of knowledge.

From highschool football in Dougherty High School to the Atlanta Falcons, and from the NFL to martial arts, Michael Reid's achievements in sports and martial arts are an inspiration to his students and many former students of Dougherty High School.
