She grew up in Chicago, and later Westmont, Illinois, attending Downer's Grove High School. She was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin '63 (B.S. Biology) and earned her doctorate in Biology (Ph.D., Stanford '84) while living in the San Francisco bay area, where she met her husband, Tom.
