Charles Douglas (Doug) Johnson

Class of 1969

OBITUARY
Charles Douglas Johnson

Perry, Utah- Charles Douglas (Doug) Johnson, 66, returned to his Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 17,2017 at his home following a battle with Stage IV Melanoma.

Doug was born on Feb. 23, 1951 to Charles Robert (Bob) Johnson and Dolores (Brown) Johnson in Fairfield, TX. He attended Eastwood High School in El Paso, TX and college at Ricks in Rexburg, ID. He served an LDS Mission in Brazil and then enlisted in the US Army in 1973, serving in the DENTAC division. Shortly after enlistment, he married the love of his life, Bonnie Ella Jarvis in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple.

The military took them to Germany twice, San Antonio, and eventually back to El Paso where he retired in August of 1993. He began a second career after going back to college at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX and earned two Masters Degrees. Doug taught High School and College, and was a school Counselor, as well as the ASVAB Coordinator for the State of Montana which led them to Butte, MT for the last 12 years of his career. He retired from Civil service in August of 2016 and was already up and running as a real estate agent. They moved to Perry in June 2017 in order to be closer to Huntsman for his treatment.

Doug was a talented artist and used his talent to enrich many lives and last-minute school projects for his children. He could paint, draw, sculpt and had an amazing eye for color and design. He had a love for music and a beautiful natural tenor voice. He was able to use this talent as a chorister, choir director, solo and ensemble singer and making up silly songs for his kids and grandkids. He had a love for cars and owned many over the years. One of his favorite pastimes was to take rides on backroads to view wildlife, scenery and most especially interesting rock formations. All that was just an excuse to spend time with his honey doing something they both enjoyed. Doug was an avid reader and did crossword puzzles, which meant he was always wanted for everyone's team when playing word games or trivia. He always loved learning and bettering himself; never content to sit still. Most of all he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Doug served faithfully his entire life in the LDS church. He held many callings including serving as Branch President and Bishop. His favorite callings were teaching music especially as the Primary Chorister. He was also a friend to all and loved by all that knew him.

Doug is survived by his wife of 44 years (friend for 51), Bonnie, his children; Brandon (Chelsea) Johnson (Vernal, UT), Barrett (Michelle) Johnson (Brigham City, UT), and Brooke (Jesse) Lee (Simms, MT), 13 grandchildren, his parents: Bob and Dolores Johnson (Overton, NV), his 2 sisters: Linda (Ron) Taylor (Logandale, NV) and Rebecca (John) Jensen (Kamas, UT). He is preceded in death by 2 infant daughters; Tara Renee Johnson and Karla Johnson, and his youngest sister and her husband Debra (Kevin) Miner.

His wish was to be cremated, so a memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the Perry Stake Center located at 685 W 2250 S in Perry, Utah.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Robison in Butte, MT, the teams at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (Dr. Andtbacka and Dr. Grossman) for the amazing care he received there and the staff at Community Nursing Services that cared for him with such skill and compassion while on Hospice. They would also like to thank all those friends and loved ones for the many hours of service, visits, care, and laughs.
