ET Damron

Class of 1966

I was never given the opportunity to share much that happened to me in Vietnam. There was never a home town release of information to inform anyone what happened. So here goes. In 1970 I enlisted in the Army, volunteered for Vietnam. I served with D troop 1/1 AIR Cav. I was an operations Sargent, and volunteered all the time Door Gunning. I was responsible for many reports, and I was always with the team. On September 16, 1971 the team was doing an operation around an aera known as QuaSon. The team mission was to find a NVA base camp in that aera. We did find it, and the bad part, we were shot down and crashed right in the middle of the base camp and all 5000 NVA troops were home. Truley devine intervention occured that day and saved me and two other men shot down with me. The Millitary do evaluate the situation and my Comanding Officer came to the 95th Evac Hospital and told me he was glad I was still alive. He said if I had ben killed he would have put me in for the Medal of Honor. As it was, he put me in for the Silver Star, Bronse Star, Purple Heart, and many other's. I never did things that day for medals, I did my job, and fought to stay alive so my brothers would have a chance for life. The Load has been good to me in many ways, but the best was when he saved our lives. God bless all my brother's and sisters I haven't seen since our High school day's. Hope to see you the next reunion.
