He is recognizable for his work as a politician, attorney, and journalist, as well as his educational prowess at the University of Washington where he graduated three times, earning a Bachelor's degree in both Editorial Journalism & Accounting, a Juris Doctorate degree, and an MBA degree. He initially rose to prominence serving as a member of the Washington House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, before his stint as a state senator between 2003 and 2007.

His leadership tenure began when he was elected chairman of the Washington State Republican Party in 2007, a position he held till 2011. During the 2008 Caucuses, Esser played a crucial role, calling the Republican presidential caucus of Washington for John McCain after 87% of the vote had been counted. After his term as chairman expired in 2011, Esser continued his political career in Bellevue, Washington where he currently resides.
