About Me | I am a 1998 graduate of Rust College located in Holly Springs, Mississippi where I majored in Broadcast Journalism/Mass Communications. I began my television career while in college at Rust College's public radio station WURC 88.1 FM, and the television station RC-TV2. I did my internship in (1997) at NBC News World Headquarters at Rockefeller Plaza, New York, New York. The program I was involved in was The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and General Electric (G.E.) Internship Program. Conducted daily research and evaluated world issues and journalism programs. While at NBC where I critiqued and performed content analysis of "The Cosby Show" , "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" and various other programs on the NBC News Television Network. I performed television production responsibilities for the Staff and Network Executives of The NBC Broadcast & Network Operations Department at Rockefeller Plaza Room 525 West. In (1997) I also worked in television productions on the set of the soap opera "Another World" at The NBC East Coast Operations Department Office at Brooklyn Studios in Brooklyn, New York. I then went on to work at (NBC) WTVA News Channel 9, in Tupelo, Mississippi where I Floor Managed Newscast Operations, Studio Lighting, Audio Engineering, and Engineering Operations, until my graduation from Rust College in 1998. Shortly after that, I was promoted on to Floor Manager and Engineering Operator at (CBS) WREG News Channel 3 where I worked in television production doing Studio Camera Operations, Grips, Editing, and Cable Wrangling (Newscast Operations, Midnight Madness Basketball Programs with The University of Memphis, Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Program for two years and then headed to the number one news leader in the mid-south Emmy Award Winning (NBC)WMC Action News 5 (WMC TV-5) for 10 years. The mentoring and valuable lessons learned at WMC Action News 5 (WMC TV-5 Action News 5) and throughout my career prepared me for becoming a teacher so after consulting my wife Tamela, mentors Lamont Matthews, Dave Brown, Joe Birch, Kym Clark, Ursula Madden and Craten Armmer my family members Mom Joyce and Grandparents Alfred and Ruthie and close friends. I then made the choice to give back the skills I had acquired in broadcast journalism to the younger generation. In 2003 I was hired by Ms. Nancy Norwood to establish The Broadcast and Media Technology Program on the campus of Millington Central High School. I instituted all of the floor plans, designed the layout of broadcasting studio lab facility, and editing suites. Although I am grateful for my awesome career in broadcast journalism and television production, I am most grateful for being married to my college sweetheart Tamela Woods-Calvin, who also works in the field of Broadcast Journalism and to be a father of three wonderful children Marshonn Jr., Micah, and Matthew Calvin who are my everything. My family is the most important thing in the world to me. Being a parent helps to guide my steps as a teacher because I believe in every student who enters my broadcasting facility. I have truly been blessed to mentor and educate the students of at East High School and my former students of MCHS. The students have went above and beyond to learn the craft of broadcasting which has been a challenging task to many of them their first year in Audio Video Production I but by the end of their third year in Audio Video Production III they have mastered all areas of production and are managing the program. The students feel they are ready to embark on a career in the media industry by the time they are ready to graduate from East High School as well as my former students at MCHS.
