Don McAlister

Class of 1968

I was born in Canada, and moved to Dallas with my family in 1966. I attended LHHS for eleventh and twelfth grade. After graduation I attended Texas A&M, and graduated in May 1972 with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering. I accepted a job offer from the Rocketdyne Division of the North American Rockwell Corporation, located in Canoga Park, CA, which in the San Fernando Valley suburb of Los Angeles. Rocketdyne is a company that designs and develops liquid rocket engines. I Started working there in July 1972, and it turned into my dream job. I worked at the same company for the next 39 1/2 years in a variety of engineering and management positions on rocket engines for the space shuttle and many other launch vehicles. I retired at the end of 2011 and then worked as a consultant for a U.S. a government agency and private industry customers on rocket propulsion projects through 2016.
My wife, Christine and I, have been married for 43 years and we have two children and three grandchildren.
In 2018, after 46 years in California, we moved to the Raleigh area of North Carolina.
My hobby is playing jazz keyboard. Since my retirement, I’ve enjoyed playing at numerous charity events around Southern California and North Carolina.
I’m a Rotarian, and enjoy working with my friends on service projects to help people in my local community.
