Jim Brown

Class of 1974

Former West Branch Resident, Jim Brown, Named California School Superintendent of the Year

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors adopted a Resolution of Commendation honoring Dr. Jim Brown after he was presented the Regional Superintendent/Principal of the Year Award for the Tri-Counties by the Association of School Administrators (ACSA). This is the first time such an honor has been awarded in Santa Barbara County.

Brown has served as Superintendent of the College School District in Santa Ynez for the past 11 years, and has lived in Carpinteria with his wife, Joanie for the past six. Dr. Brown received his Doctor of Education Degree in Organizational Leadership, this past August from the University of LaVerne.

After the Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors awarded Dr. Brown the resolution Tuesday morning, he learned later that afternoon, that he had also been awarded the Superintendent/Principal of the Year Statewide.

Supervisor Doreen Farr’s opening comments included, “This is the best part of my job recognizing so many outstanding individuals in our county.” She also remarked that although College was small it was a “mighty” District. The resolution was read by Chief Deputy Clerk, Michael Allen which included a long list of Brown’s achievements and “first ever” accomplishments and awards for the College School District. When asked to comment on his award, Brown stated, “We can be proud of the fine work of our Superintendents and Educators throughout our county who work hard to ensure a high quality education for our Santa Barbara County students.”

Brown accepted his award on behalf of the District Board of Trustees, Faculty, Staff and Families and acknowledged the contributions of his colleagues who contributed to this recognition. A copy of the resolution, as well as a video of the presentation, can be viewed at the Board of Supervisors, March 15, 2011 meeting web site.

Jim. Brown lived in West Branch, Michigan with his family from 1956-1972 and attended West Branch schools until they moved to Southern California. (Jim attended Ogemaw Heights High School from 1970-1972).

Brown continues his West Branch connections, and attends class reunions whenever possible. The entire family had a first-ever family reunion in West Branch and visited many childhood sites including “The Big Flow,”, Ogemaw Hills Ski Resort, school sites, former restaurants, and family homes and churches. The Brown family visit was hosted by Jim’s boyhood friends, Dan “the Rat” Winter, and Kerry “Jr.” Klug. He was spotted last summer riding a Harley down the main drag of West Branch.
