Chris Alsup serves as the Legislative Director for Congressman John R. Carter (TX-31) who serves on the House Committee on Appropriations. After participating in Mr. Carter’s successful congressional campaign, he joined the Congressman’s Washington, DC staff in January 2003, at the start of the 108th U.S. Congress. While working for Carter, Chris worked his way up through the office ranks from Staff Assistant to his current position.

As the Legislative Director, Chris manages the legislative shop and is responsible for the implementation of the Congressman’s legislative agenda. Additionally Chris is responsible for all defense appropriations requests, foreign affairs, health and military-related issues for the district. In addition, Chris supports the Congressman on matters related to his elected position as the House Republican Conference Secretary.

Chris was born and raised primarily in Central Illinois. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2000 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. Prior to working for Congressman Carter, he worked for State Representative (now Senator) Kip Averitt of Waco during the 77th Texas Legislative Session.

Chris brings to the position his own experience in the U.S. Army. He enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard in December of 1990, and attended Basic Training at North Fort Hood in the summer of 1991. Chris then entered 77W (Water Purification Specialist) training in 1992 at Ft. Lee, Virginia.

In 1993, Chris enlisted into the Active Duty Army and returned to Ft. Lee for a second training as a 92Y Unit Supply Specialist. Chris was then stationed at Ft. Kobe, Panama, with the 1st Battalion, 508th Airborne Infantry Regiment. After the Unit’s deactivation in 1994, Chris was transferred to Fort Hood and assigned to Bravo Company, 1-8 Cavalry where he served as the Unit Armorer and Supply Sergeant. In 1995, Chris was deployed to Kuwait as part of the Operation Intrinsic Action advance party with the 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. In September of 1996, Chris was Honorably Discharged as an E-5.

Chris’s wife, Julie, serves as the Assistant Communications Manager for International Paper. They met while working on Congressman Carter’s first campaign and later became friends while working in the Congressman’s DC office.
