About George Lenwood Hamilton was born on March 27, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Mrs. Daisy (Jackson) Hamilton of Columbus, Miss. Len, as he preferred to go by, grew up in the Rosedale Community of Homewood, Alabama, where he was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He attended Rosedale School and graduated from Shades Valley High School. At Shades Valley, Len participated in football, basketball, baseball, band, and general high school hiijinks, contributing to quite an impression he left on the teaching staff. Rumor has it that a Shades Valley teacher who taught in 1972 was still teaching there when his daughter attended the school, and she remembered Len fondly! At an early age, he was definitely memorable!

After graduating from high school, Len obtained an Associates degree in Social Work from Jefferson State Community College followed by a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from the University of Montevallo, where he met and married Sheila Carlton. In 1985, the couple welcomed a daughter, Tiffany, and although the marriage came to an end, their abilities to become great co-parents and friends endured to the end.

Len worked in the field of adult mental illness and intellectual disability for over forty years. He was supervisor at Glenn Ireland Development Center until its doors closed. He taught and helped manage the McCoy Center Day Program with Piper Place until he retired. His caring nature, and unyielding patience were admired by all who worked with him. In his past time, Len not only followed Alabama Football and other sports, he also played in a band, played baseball well after college, refereed for youth sports, and later coached football and basketball to young and budding athletes in East Thomas.

In 2015, an unexpected spine injury forced Len into early retirement from work and coaching, but it didn't take his infectious spirit and smile. Len continued to uplift and inspire everyone he met everywhere he went.

Len passed away June 5, 2022. Preceding Len in death was his mother, Daisy Jackson Hamilton. He leaves behind to tell his stories, a daughter, Tiffiany Simon (Brett) and a granddaughter, Arcadia Simon (age 3), all of Madison, AL; a host of cousins and friends who were just as close as family.
