Graduation Year Class of 1960
Date of Passing Sep 14, 2009
About Margaret Anna Goldenstein of St. Charles Visitation for Margaret Anna Goldenstein, 66, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held Thursday, Sept. 24, at Grace Evangelical Church, 1800 Bowes Road, Elgin, at 11 a.m. Rev. Reuben Parlier, former pastor of the church, will officiate and interment will follow at Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin.. The service will also be available on the website the following day in an on-demand format so anyone can watch at anytime. Born Nov. 25, 1942, in Elgin, the daughter of Herman and Emma (nee Hoffmann) Goldenstein, she died tragically Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital. Margaret grew up on the family farm in St. Charles, that changed over the years from a dairy to a grain farm. She attended local schools and graduated St. Charles High School with the class of 1960. Margaret then began working at Delnor Hospital as an aid in physical therapy and was known in certain hospital circles as "Hubbard Tank Annie." Later, she changed from full-time to part-time after her father had a stroke and eventually retired shortly after her mother's death to care for her father. Following his passing in 1993, Margaret continued to live on the family farm and although she was technically "retired" she never slowed down. Up every morning to do chores, Margaret delighted in all of God's creatures whether great or small, caring for them as if they were her very own children. During this time Margaret had a chance to help raise and care for Shannon Jungels, the infant daughter of her cousin Carol on Jan. 30, 1981. Shannon very quickly became the daughter Margaret never had. They became inseparable and a very special bond formed between the two. Margaret became a second mother and confidant to Shannon, walking side by side with her as Shannon grew into a young woman. Later at a family wedding, Margaret would meet Bruce Conley who once worked at Delnor, now a funeral director, the friendship between the two that began those many years ago blossomed again and before long Margaret began working at Conley Funeral Home in Elburn

St. Charles woman killed by out-of-control horse

An out-of-control horse trampled one woman to death, dragged the rider and left another woman in critical condition with multiple head injuries Monday in Kane County.

Kane County sheriff's police said Charlotte Anna VonHarling, 19, of Hamburg, Germany, lost control of a horse she was riding about 4 p.m. Monday in an open field at 9N467 Kendall Road in Plato Township. The horse trampled two of her cousins.

Margaret Goldenstein, 66, of St. Charles, and Renate Anna Saeger, 76, of Switzerland were thrown backward after being struck by the horse, police said. VonHarling was thrown from the horse, but her foot was tangled in the saddle. The horse dragged her about 20 feet.

Goldenstein was pronounced dead at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. Saeger was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital and later airlifted to Rockford Memorial Hospital late Monday, police said. VonHarling was discharged Monday evening from Sherman Hospital in Elgin, hospital officials said. The accident happened just two days after an annual Goldenstein family reunion, family members said.

Goldenstein worked as a nurse for many years at Delnor Hospital in Geneva before retiring from that job to care for her parents. Goldenstein loved the farm and animals; she and her sister Katherine cared for many animals as well as caring for their parents, family said.
