Manny Delcarmen (Class of 2000)

Major League Baseball player

What is Manny Delcarmen (Class of 2000) known for?

Manny Delcarmen, born February 16, 1982 in Hyde Park, Boston, Massachusetts, is a proud alumnus of West Roxbury High School and a former Major League Baseball (MLB) player. Known as "The Pride of Hyde Park", he had an impressive six-year stint in the MLB, chiefly playing for the Boston Red Sox from 2005 to 2010, with a brief run for the Colorado Rockies in 2010.

Delcarmen's professional baseball career kicked off when he was a second-round pick by Boston in the 2000 Major League Baseball draft. Remarkably, he was the first draftee from a Boston public high school in 34 years. Delcarmen's career highlights include his exceptional win-loss record of 11-8, an earned run average (ERA) of 3.97, and an impressive 249 strikeouts.

His abilities in the MLB weren't just limited to his impressive statistics; Delcarmen also helped the Boston Red Sox secure the 2007 World Series championship. After his professional career, he served as an assistant coach with Fisher College in Boston during the 2022 season.

Delcarmen's story clearly transcends his notable career statistics. Overcoming obstacles that included a serious injury requiring Tommy John surgery in May 2003, Delcarmen demonstrated resilience and a powerful will to win. Post-surgery, he returned to the mound a year later, his fastball potentially gaining velocity and topping out in the high 90s.

Delcarmen made his debut with the Red Sox on July 26, 2005, continuing to shape a career characterized by strong performances and key contributions. These contributions include his first major league win while pitching two innings of relief against the Texas Rangers in 2006, and his first major league save in a 6-2 Red Sox victory over Cleveland in 2007.

He continued his impressive showing in the 2008 season, appearing in 73 games for Boston, and posted a 5–2 record with 4.53 ERA and 44 strikeouts during 64 games played in 2009. He began the 2010 season with Boston, where he participated in 48 games, achieving a 3–2 record, a 4.70 ERA, and 32 strikeouts. Overall, Delcarmen's tenure with the Red Sox saw him appear in 289 games, accumulating an 11–6 record with three saves and 243 strikeouts.

Delcarmen's career, both as a ballplayer and as an individual, embodies the spirit of resilience and determination. He has proven himself as an accomplished athlete and a notable alumnus of West Roxbury High School.
