A good school history story.

I had the privilege of being on the committee to name Westlake; select the school’s mascot, colors, and the type of school it would be. We voted on Westlake being the Math/Science Magnet School.

I attended Lakeshore High in College Park and in 10th grade I was approached by Principal A. Delores Mitchell to represent my class and school to share the students’ sentiment of Lakeshore and Westwood merging. I was class president at the time and had countless of meetings preparing to speak with the school board. My class was adamantly against merging because class of 1989 was the last 8th grade class at Lakeshore and we wanted to be the last senior class. I spoke several times at the Board meetings, but to no avail. Our desires were not obliged. The minds were made up, the lines for redistricting we’re drawn, and the decision to build middle schools for the first time in South Fulton County had already been planned.

So rather than stay upset about not getting our way, we finally embraced Westlake. It was hard at first, but we got over it…sort of. Lol. Of course we loved and still love our home school. Lancer baby, but we also have genuine love for Westlake!

Fast forward. At our 25th class reunion, I came up with the name The OGs to describe class of ‘89. The Original Graduates, Westlake’s first graduating class. And the rest is history.
