About Jane Meredith Martin, 68, of Scales Mound, IL, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2014, at ManorCare Health Services, in Dubuque, IA. Her family was by her side.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 A/M, Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, in Scales Mound, with Pastor Katharine Linn officiating. Burial will be in the Scales Mound Township Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 P/M to 7 P/M, Tuesday, March 18th, at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Scales Mound.

Jane was born May 2, 1945, in the Chicago suburb of Villa Park, IL, the daughter of Ernest K and Ruth M. (Ptolemy) Luethke. Jane graduated from Willowbrook High School in 1963 and from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, in 1967, with a major in Business Education and a minor in Music.

After college, Jane accepted a business teaching position in Scales Mound, IL. Jane only intended to stay one year in Scales Mound; however she met and fell in love with a local farmer, Wayne Martin, and they were married on July 17, 1971, at the First Presbyterian Church in Scales Mound. Jane was quickly introduced to farm life and helped Wayne with numerous farm chores. Jane had a wonderful sense of humor, and she often joked about the eye-opening experiences she had in her transition from the city to the farm.

While helping on the farm and raising two daughters, Janna and Leanne, Jane continued teaching at Scales Mound. Over her 35 year career, she touched the lives of generations of Scales Mound students teaching subjects such as Bookkeeping, Shorthand, Typing, Accounting and Keyboarding. After retiring, she continued to stay involved in the education community as a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association.

Jane loved music, arts, crafts and sports. Growing up, she played oboe in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and she continued her music education in the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater Concert Band. She loved attending country music concerts with her friends. She enjoyed many hobbies, including painting, pottery, calligraphy, scrapbooking, and sewing. She avidly followed Scales Mound High School sports.

Jane was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her husband, Wayne, of Scales Mound, IL; two daughters, Janna (Jeff) Schmitt, of Galena, IL, and Leanne (fiance', Chris Steege), of Lawrence, KS; one grandson, Gavin Schmitt, of Galena, IL; an aunt, Mildred Rummelhoff, of Moorpark, CA; two sisters-in-law, Kay Redfearn, of Hazel Green, WI, and Marlene Baker, of Tolono, IL and their families; several cousins and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, William and Edna Martin; and a brother-in-law, Eugene Martin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations me made in Jane's memory to The Scleroderma Foundation (scleroderma.org). Jane bravely fought systemic scleroderma for many years.

The family wishes to extend a "special thank-you" to the doctors, nurses, and staff at ManorCare Health Services, Mercy Medical Center and Hospice of Dubuque, for their kind and compassionate care
