Sondra Lipton

Model and painter

What is Sondra Lipton known for?

Our spotlight shines on Sondra Lipton, a multi-talented individual with an inspiring career progression. Born and raised in the heart of New York City, her journey in the arts commenced with her education at Julia Richman High School, and furthered at the prestigious School of American Ballet. Here, she had the opportunity to dance in several Broadway shows and was part of the dance company of the Experimental Theatre in May 1948.

However, her towering height of 5'9" at the tender age of 19 led her to the world of fashion. Starting at Christian Dior in New York City, with her striking appearance of red hair, amber eyes, an aquiline nose and large teeth, she was quickly noticed. Her career as a fashion model spanned a remarkable twenty years, during which time she represented Mannequin, a new modeling agency, in 1960, modeled designs by Fira Benenson, and even showcased a new religious habit designed by Sybil Connolly at a Sisters of Mercy convention.

In the midst of her modeling career, Lipton sought solace and relaxation in the realm of sculpture, studying at New York University. However, her artistic journey ultimately found its home in painting, a pursuit she began in 1963. Over time, her still lifes of flowers and fruits gained appreciation and ownership from notable figures including Mrs. Winthrop Rockefeller, Sir David Webster, and movie producer Ross Hunter. Even President Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson were on the receiving end of a Lipton original as a Christmas gift in 1968. Her artworks were exhibited at the prestigious Lord & Taylor.

In 1976, she further explored creativity by collaborating with former fashion model, Claire Geiman, to design a line of table linens called Dining-In, unveiled and sold by none other than Lord & Taylor. The line offered beautiful easy-care cotton collection available in various attractive color combinations, further showcasing her artistic talent.

Today, Sondra Lipton continues to inspire many with her inimitable journey of creativity and artistic exploration. To view or purchase her artwork, you can visit her website at SondraLiptonArt.com.
