Larry Carwell

Former NFL player

What is Larry Carwell known for?

Larry Carwell, born on August 5, 1944, in Vada, Georgia, was an acclaimed American football player and later, a dedicated officer for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. One of Memorial High School's prominent former students, Carwell's life was defined by tenacity both on and off the football field.

In his career as a professional football player, Carwell played as a cornerback. His trail started at Iowa State University where he played college football. Brought into the professional realm in the 1967 American Football League (AFL) Draft, Carwell proved his worth, first as part of the Houston Oilers (1967–1968), and then with the Boston/New England Patriots (1969–1972). His athletic feats and contributions to the sport earned him a place in the annals of American Football League history.

Transitioning from sports to service, Carwell joined the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in 1984. His work involved restricting the flow of illegal substances, such as marijuana and cocaine, into the United States from Latin America. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, Carwell and four others were reported missing and presumed lost at sea when their helicopter, en route to the Bahamas, crashed.

Larry Carwell's life, although tragically cut short, serves as an inspiration. His dedication to football and public service is remembered by the Memorial High School community, and he continues to be a beacon for aspiring athletes and public servants alike.
