Merrill Reese

Voice of NFL's Philadelphia Eagles

What is Merrill Reese known for?

Merrill Alan Reese, born on September 2, 1942, is a renowned American sports radio announcer. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, specifically in Overbrook Park. He attended Overbrook High School, marking the start of his ties to his local community. Reese later went on to secure a bachelor's degree in Communications and Broadcasting from Temple University.

In the early years of his career, Reese honed his skills at the university's radio station, WRTI FM, and even hosted a music show. Post-graduation, after serving in the United States Navy, Reese started his professional broadcasting journey, bagging gigs at radio stations in Coatesville and Pottstown, Pennsylvania.

Reese's shining moment came when he emerged as the voice of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1977, a role he holds to this day. He transitioned to doing the Eagles' play-by-play after the tragic death of his predecessor, Charlie Swift. He has since become the longest-serving current play-by-play announcer in the NFL, with Mike Quick, a former Eagles wide receiver, joining him in the booth in 1998.

A highlight of Reese's career was when he was inducted into the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame in 2016. Another notable moment came in 2018 when he called Super Bowl LII, where the Eagles clinched their first Super Bowl title. His call of the famous "Philly Special" play and the game's final play are still fondly remembered by fans.

Beyond his professional achievements, Reese is a co-owner of the radio station WBCB (AM) in Levittown, Pennsylvania, a suburb north of Philadelphia. He also penned an autobiography titled "It's Gooooood!" in 1998, referencing his iconic "field goal" call.

On a personal note, Reese's wife Cynthia had a notable career as a sixth-grade science teacher in a Philadelphia suburb, and his son Nolan has made his mark in the film industry as an assistant editor of high-profile films such as Avatar and Iron Man 2.

Despite all the fame and recognition, Merrill Reese has remained loyal to his Philadelphia roots. His unique voice and persona have made him an integral part of the city's sports community.
