Following her high school graduation, she attended Ohio Wesleyan University.

Van Devere initiated her acting career in 1966 and remained active in the industry until 1994. Her first significant role was Meredith Lord in the soap opera One Life to Live in 1968. Her income from this role played a key role in maintaining the Poor People's Theater Company, which she co-founded with Scott Cunningham.

Her career took an upward turn with her leading role in the film One Is a Lonely Number in 1972, which garnered her a nomination for a Golden Globe Award. Additionally, Van Devere's outstanding performance in the film The Changeling (1980) earned her a Genie Award.

Personal life intertwines with her professional journey when she married fellow actor George C. Scott in September 1972.
