Dave Cole

Former Major League Baseball pitcher

What is Dave Cole known for?

David Bruce Cole, born on August 29, 1930, hailed from Williamsport, Maryland. He attended Williamsport High School before beginning his career in Major League Baseball. Dave Cole is remembered as an American professional baseball pitcher who played for six seasons, from 1950 to 1955.

Cole was known for his time with the Boston Braves (now Atlanta Braves), where he started his career in September 1950. He followed the team's transition to Milwaukee and became known as one of the "wildest" pitchers, with a career BB/9 (Base on Balls per 9 innings) of 7.556. He made quite a name for himself by achieving the remarkable feat of recording three outs without throwing a single strike in a 1952 game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

After four years with the Braves, Cole spent a season with the Chicago Cubs in 1954 before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1955. This trade was somewhat amusing to Cole, as he reportedly quipped: "That's too bad; they're the only team I can beat."

His MLB statistics include an earned run average (ERA) of 4.94, a win-loss record of 6-18, and 119 strikeouts. Cole retired from playing in June 1955 and passed away in his hometown of Williamsport, Maryland on October 26, 2011.
