Spent three years as enlisted before attending Naval Flight School and spent career in aviation billets flying Helicopters, Reconnaissance and attack aircraft. Flying mostly the A-4 Skyhawk and the OV-10 Bronco with two combat tours in Vietnam I retired as a Major before beginning a career in aerospace with McDonnell Douglas and the Boeing Company.

During his time in service Roy was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters; the National defense Service Medal; the Good Conduct Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters with Clasp; the army service Ribbon; the Overseas Service Ribbon; the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars; the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
