Anthony J. Niesz
Class of 1965
After graduating from Cardinal Dougherty in 1965, I attended the University of Pennsylvania, where I majored in German language, linguistics, and literature, graduating magna cum laude in 1969. I spent the following year at the Freie Universität Berlin in West Berlin, and met my wife Helga on the ship M.S. Europa going to Germany. 1970 we got engaged, and I followed her to the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where we got our MA's and got married in 1971. In 1975 I got a job as an Assistant Professor at Yale University, where I have been working ever since. (Got my Ph.D. in 1977.) I am planning to retire from Yale in June 2011.
We have two sons, Tony and Stephen. Tony worked for about 10 years at Apple Computer as a software engineer, and then quit in order to start his own company. Stephen is working as a manager/supervisor at our local UPS distribution center.
My hobbies and interests include the following: aquariums (my I have a 125 gallon tank with my favorite Oscar fish), art (I dabble in oil painting), astronomy (I have a Meade LX200 telescope), boating (we had a 26 ft sailboat for 14 years, but now we have a 30 ft. cabin cruiser, and enjoy cruising on Long Island Sound), computers (I built my first computer, an SWTPC 6800 in 1977 from a kit, have learned numerous computer languages, and written 8 DVD's worth of software for language learning), ham radio (I particularly enjoy low power Morse code operating), metalworking (I have a metalworking lathe, metal milling machine, and metal bandsaw, and love making swarf), photography (I did color printing in my darkroom as early as 1971, but have been using digital equipment and Photoshop for the last 12 years or so), videography (love my HD video camera, and edit the results on my 27 inch imac), and woodworking (have a completely equipped woodworking shop in my garage, and have built many items of furniture for the house.)
I will be retiring from Yale in June 2011, and look forward to having a lot more time to spend on my hobbies and interests.
I would be happy to hear from any of my old CD school chums!
