Favorite School Memory | There are too many to narrow down to just one: riding horseback through the neighborhood including school property; being checked out of school with my brother by my mom to accompany her on her flying lessons at the Bessemer airport, and flying over the school; rolling yards at night with my friends; walking to Welden’s Pharmacy accompanied by all the neighborhood dogs; singing in the concert choir and later accompanying the choir on piano, seeing the expression on Mr. Allen’s face in front of the entire choir when I proved to him that I have perfect pitch, traveling with the choir to New Orleans by bus for the national competition and winning third place, being sent to the principal’s office for giggling and laughing uproariously in choir with a friend and enduring punishment by giggling and laughing uproariously with same friend for the rest of the day in the student lounge (all because we wouldn’t reveal WHAT we were laughing about - OUR SECRET!); going to football games with friends and to Shakey’s Pizza afterward to hopefully meet boys; participating in piano recitals at Birmingham-Southern’s Hill Recital Hall; enjoying the freedom of walking to and from school with my friends, and later being able to drive back and forth to school; driving my friends and my brother and his friends to activities and events, such as roller skating at Upton’s and Lowe’s; enjoying dinners with my family at the Iceberg, Triangle, Lochamy’s and Britling’s; and growing up in such a wonderful comm...(read more) |
About Me | WORK: Studied piano, went to x-ray school on a whim and worked in the medical field since then in some form or fashion: hospital, clinic, mobile mammography, marketing, and contracting. My employers include Bessemer Carraway, St. Vincent’s Hospital, UAB Health Services Foundation, Southview Medical Group, HealthSouth (Corporate HQ on 280), United HealthCare of AL, and lastly, Best Doctors out of Boston, MA. Working for Best Doctors was the pinnacle of my career. I am now semi-retired. There never was a career plan, it just sort of happened. PERSONAL: Fell head over heels in love with a fellow from Leeds soon after high school, the love of my life; but timing was wrong and we never married each other, although we maintained very infrequent contact over the years. My parents moved my brother and me to Indian Springs after high school, and then I married a wonderful man, David Gordon Willis, (31 to my 23), who was raised in Homewood, in 1980. After living in Maison de Ville apartments for a while, we moved to a home near my parents’ place in Indian Springs. We never had children, but we loved our dogs almost as much. As happens within many marriages, ours didn’t make it. We parted ways in 2000 and I moved to Philadelphia, PA to begin a brand new life in a brand new place. Sadly, I recently learned that David passed away from cancer. My knight in shining armor, Joe Degnan, helped me relocate to this area and then he married me and gave me a beautifully charmed life. He has literally shown me the world and has established our lives here in the Main Line. Lucky for me that he is as handsome as he is deep-down good. We now live in Willistown township, which is smack dab in the middle of horse country. 5 miles to our west is the borough of West Chester, where the actress Eva Marie Saint now lives in her retirement. We were pleasantly surprised recently when we saw the actor Joe Pesci entertain at Vincent’s in West Chester one evening. Ernest Borgnine and his wife, Tova, have a summer home near here on an estate in Chester County. QVC is 3 miles to the northwest, which is where Tova displays her products. 20 minutes to our west is the Amish country where the movie Witness was filmed. I take my parents there for Sunday drives. 20 miles to our east is the city of Philadelphia. A trip to Washington DC, Atlantic City and NYC is within a day’s drive. At the present time we are both enjoying an early retirement, ...(read more) |
