Navy, 11 Years
corrected: served on u.s.s. chandler, ddg-996 and u.s.s. enterprise, cvn-65. awarded commendations and is the only sailor since world war 2 awarded the navy ring for absolute fearlessness, bravery and valor in the face of death against 15 libyans firing machine guns at him from a gunboat which attacked the enterprise @ 01:15 hrs. one evening during her 1988 deployment. sn. egbert removed his marlinspike from his knife sheath, broke into the ammo box mounted on the bulkhead behind him, took out 2 strings of rounds for the 50 cal mounted on his lookout watch post, and returned fire, firing not at the libyans themselves, but at the gunboat's starboard side at the waterline starting at the bow punching holes in it heading towards the stearn. about 1.5 meters from the dead stearn, the gunboat violently expoloded, throwing the libyans clear and into the persian gulf. sn. egbert didn't even know he was grazed on the left side of his head, until capt. spane came to the watch post after the explosion and told him about it. the libyans were rescued from the water by the ship's helicopters with armed marine corps detachment personnel onboard, and taken to the ship's brig for interrogation. that evening, sn. egbert defended his ship, and the lives and safety of all 6,107 personnel onboard, including the captain, and the battle group commander, a 2 star admiral. it was said by captain spane during the award ceremony that if there had been a declaration of war by congress, or an ordered police action by president reagan, sn. egbert would have been awarded the top 5 medals a millitary serviceman can be awarded, including the congressional medal of honor.
