During his 3 years in the Army, He served 12 months in Viet Nam (1967 - 1968) and during this tour, he was awarded the Commendation Medal with "V" for Valor for disarming almost 100 land mines while serving with the Corp of Engineers. He also received a Purple Heart when a truck tire blew up while changing a flat causing injury to face and loosened teeth. No dentists were on duty in the jungles so he a medic brace his teeth with bailing wire.
