Race walker

What is Robyn Stevens (born 1983) known for?

Robyn Stevens was born on April 24, 1983, in Vacaville, California. A distinguished athlete, she competed in track and field for Vacaville High School before joining the San Jose State Spartans of San José State University. Stevens's specialty event in track and field was the 20 kilometers race walk.

Despite encountering personal challenges, including an eating disorder and body dysmorphia during her time at university that forced her to take a break from competing in 2004, Stevens made a strong comeback in 2014. Notably, she partook in the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo in 2021.

Stevens's race walking career boasts several impressive achievements. In 2019 and 2020, she won the U.S. 50 kilometer race walk championship, with her 2020 victory in Santee, California being particularly dominant as she led from start to finish, winning by over 9 1/2 minutes. That same year, she also triumphed in the Utah indoor 3000 meters race walk and performed admirably in the Millrose Games indoor mile in New York City. Stevens went on to win the 2020 USA Olympic Trial 20k race walk event in Eugene, Oregon, finishing over four minutes ahead of the second-place finisher.

Her Olympic journey saw her compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2021 where she finished 33rd out of 58 athletes. She also participated in the 2022 World Athletics Championships, finishing the 20km race walking competition in 24th place.

Stevens's personal life was significantly impacted when she alleged sexual abuse by her former coach, Andreas “Dre” Gustafsson. Concerned about the potential victimization of other female athletes, she lodged a complaint with the U.S. Center for SafeSport in late 2020, leading to Gustafsson's provisional suspension for “sexual misconduct” in August 2022.
