Upon graduating high school in 1943, he served in World War II in the 104th Infantry Regiment under General Patton in the European Theater. He was awarded the Silver Star for bravery by capturing an enemy machine gun nest, and also received a Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge. ++++++++ The Silver Star is the third highest military award designated solely for heroism in combat. Established in 1918 as the Citation Star, in 1932 it was re-designated as a medal with a retroactive provision that allowed servicemen as far back as the Spanish-American War (1898) to receive it for gallant actions. ++++++++Years of service estimated ++++++++
