One of first women in the Army to officially qualify on the M16. We all qualified as sharpshooter or better with 1 hour familiarization with the weapon, 12 rounds to zero, no practice rounds, fire for qualification. The Range Master wanted us to all fail and issued helmets with no liners, no sandbags in the foxholes to adjust for height, but he was an advocate by the end of the day.

Thom signed up as an early enlistment while in high school, going to Basic Training at Lackland AFB, TX. After finishing his first tour of duty, he went on to college and graduate school becoming a United Methodist Pastor. He was commissioned in 1982 as a Chaplain Candidate, later becoming an Air Force Chaplain in the AF Reserves. In support of Operation Desert Storm, Chaplain Porter was called to Active Duty. Finally Chaplain Porter returned to Active Duty April 1994 and served until June 2012, retiring as a Major as the Wing Chaplain for the 501 Combat Support Wing, Alconbury, UK. Chaplain, Thom Porter served four deployments, received a Bronze Star, and served three years as the Course Director for the Combat Ministry Course, Fort Dix, NJ.
